Red Door Bakery
Just two minutes from the CBD is the Red Door Bakery. Their pie menu includes specials like chicken, white bean and chorizo, and Berkshire free range pork and sage sausage rolls, alongside the more common chicken and beef varieties. Dulwich Bakery
Something of a dominant force in the Adelaide pie scene, Dulwich Bakery can be found in Dulwich, Collinswood, Malvern, Glenelg South, and Unley. Fortunately this means that access to their range of pies is conveniently placed for anyone in need of lunch on the run. The chilli steak pie is worth it just for the pepper and chilli flaked pastry topping and the gravy/spice/meat ratio is dead-on. 66 Dulwich Avenue, Dulwich 5064. St Peters Bakehouse
Go for the sesame seed spotted chicken pie and a mildly spicy steak and mushroom are at the St Peters Bakehouse. The chicken option is seriously tasty the steak and mushroom is unfailingly democratic in its delivery of equal proportions of steak and mushroom. 66 Seventh Avenue, St Peters 5069. Queen of Tarts
The Queen of Tarts on Hutt Street is more café than bakery but their lamb and tomato pie is definitely worth including on any list of Adelaide’s dependable pies. A little more experimental in its construction, the result is something between a quiche and pie, with slow cooked lamb and a gentle tomato sauce, all wrapped up in a firm and sweet pastry shell. 178 Hutt St City (08 8223 1529 www.queenoftarts.com.au). Duthy’s Bakehouse
When it comes to comfort food, Duthy’s Bakehouse serves up a steak and tomato pie well above the average offering found in our nation’s warming trays.
