Laksa House
Shop 1, Market Plaza Food Court, Adelaide Central Markets, Grote St, Adelaide 5000. (08 8410 7099)
The laksas here are legendary and the noodles are so delicious they caused our music editor to
pen a verse in their honour. The service is swift and no-nonsense and the plates and bowls are filled to the brim. There are seven different types of Laksa on the menu – including an intriguing dumpling laksa for those who want it all in a single bowl. There is fried rice, hokkien and Singapore noodles on offer, not to mention the comically named wet ho fun and dry ho fun. Dry ho fun is something between a pad see ew and a pad kee mao with thick rice noodles, prawn, fish, chicken and a touch of chilli. The only vegetables are slices of green onion - more for flavour than vitamin content - and bean shoots. Asian comfort food at its best.

Ricky’s Chicken Rice
Market Plaza Food Court, Adelaide Central Markets, Grote St, Adelaide 5000.
The light and tasty Hainanese style steamed chicken at Ricky’s comes with extremely tender chicken breast in a light soy sauce, mild chicken rice, a salty broth with fried onions and shallots, and a fluorescent orange chilli sauce and luminous green sauce of unclear origins. It is cheap, plentiful neatly sidesteps any guilt associated with food court dining.
Seng Kee Yum Cha
Market Plaza Food Court, Adelaide Central Markets, Grote St, Adelaide 5000.
The third pillar of food court dining is Chinese. Seng Kee Yum Cha does all the classics - steamed dumplings, dim sum, chicken feet, pork buns, fried calamari and fried wontons - so that you don’t have to get up early and wait in line for the restoring powers of yum cha. The pork buns are compact and sweet and with only two in a serve you’ll want one all to yourself. The casing for the scallop, prawn and coriander dumplings is thicker than we prefer but the filling is fresh and sweet, with no skimping on the good bits.

Silver Star Café
Market Plaza Food Court, Adelaide Central Markets, Grote St, Adelaide 5000.
The Silver Star Café is a wondrous cave of refreshment, lined with four massive fridges filled with all manner of beers, cider, juices and soft drinks - some imported, others local - and a surprisingly decent range of wines considering it’s in a food court.
What better way to round off your meal than with one of Adelaide’s finest brews so salute to the good people of SA and wash down you meal with a stubby of Coopers.
