Time Out Melbourne

The Megahertz and the Rockdogs live to fight another day! We've got the music line-up and commentary from the teams...

The two-decade tradition continues this year with “such a perfect day” at Elsternwick Park. This year’s theme is a tribute to the late Lou Reed. For some it’s an enjoyable day of family activities where football, rock'n'roll and charity meet for a good time and a good cause. For others, it’s a serious day of footy rivalry; a rematch to finally settle the score between Triple R 102.7FM / PBS 106.7FM Megahertz and the Rockdogs following the last two years of tied games. Last year’s event saw well over 10,000 attend, raising over $100,000 for Reclink Australia. This year, the entertainment line-up is as follows:

12.10pm : Elmo & Friends Live
12.45pm : Fraser A. Gorman
1.30pm : Smith Street Band
2.10pm : Teams Enter Ground
2.25pm : National Anthem by David Bridie
2.30pm : Match commences
Half time : Saskwatch
Post-match : Painters & Dockers

We asked two players what the game means to them.

Representing radio, RRR’s Stewart Farrell from Megahertz

Stewart, how long have you been on your team?
I was part of the original team in 1997 that played at Ross Gregory Oval in Albert Park, in front of about 300 people. I became involved as I was an announcer at PBS FM and was mates with Bill Walsh [now owner of the Ding Dong Lounge] who was co-captain with RRR's James Young Walsh [now owner of Cherry Bar].

What has been your personal finest hour?
Kicking the goal about three years ago that put the Megas a point in front at the final siren. One of our main weapons, Jarred Kennedy, bolted down the wing to deliver a pass about 65 metres out on the boundary. Luckily I slotted it and the rest is history.

Last year was a draw. How confident are you feeling this year?
Very! We’ve been training since March. DQ, our head coach, has been an inspiration; Vince Peach and Crispi have been spiritually in the zone; our new co-captain, Emma Peel, has been electric on the training track, and that coupled with proven champions Chris Gill, Eli Schoulal, Serious Joe Kokomo and Jacinta Parsons means we are unbeatable. Megahertz by six goals in 2014!

Representing the musos, Ruby Koomen from Modesty

Ruby, how long have you been on your team?
I have just turned to the dark side by signing with the Rockdogs FC! I had been a part of the mighty Megahertz for the past four years, but since I had to drop my show Garageland on PBS due to band commitments with Modesty, LOOBS and Ruby Soho, it was time for the transfer.

What has been your personal finest hour?
It was in 2012 when my band Bunny Monroe played the pre-game entertainment. There is nothing as exhilarating as running out on to Elsternwick Park with all your favourite rock’n’ rollers and radio personalities – except if you get the adrenalin rush of playing with your band first. I remember saying, “This is the best day of my life.”

How confident are you feeling this year?
The Rockdogs'll be taking it out... NO MORE DRAWS is our motto this year, plus I don't reckon I could hack a loss after becoming a traitor, so I'll be trying extra hard.
