The only festival of its kind, Emerge showcases talented artists from Melbourne’s emerging refugee communities. It’s a chance for Melbourne to learn about cultures from Africa to the Far East through their food, music, dance and crafts. This year, in celebration of the 11th anniversary and in recognition of United Nations World Refugee Day and Refugee Week, the festival is running throughout Melbourne’s suburbs for six weeks.

The festival kicks off in Footscray with a concert featuring African dance grooves, Sudanese reggae, Ethiopian jazz, Azmari banter, Somali pop and spoken word. Moving through Melbourne to Fitzroy’s town hall, the main event will highlight music from Samoa and Afganistan as well as artisan markets. Continuing through the suburbs out to Dandenong, toward the end of the festival will be a showcase of Hazara culture (from central-Afghanistan) though poetry, music and theatre. With a list of performances, workshops and exhibitions spread throughout the six weeks, be sure to check out the website for event dates and times.
