Time Out Melbourne

This event has finished

Brace yourself for the return of an evening that's so Melbourne as to be both ridiculous and wonderful all at once

Presentation Night brings together the worlds of AFL and music. In the first event this year, Geelong premiership captain (and Buddy Holly enthusiast) Cameron Ling talks about music, football and life with musician Paul Dempsey. The evening, held at the Corner Hotel a stone's throw from the MCG, is hosted by Francis Leach of ABC's Grandstand Breakfast.

It's the brainchild of Andy Kelly of Winterman & Goldstein management and Ivy League records.

"Like pretty much everyone I know who shares a love of the indigenous game and the music caper, a lot of my childhood and teenage childhood memories are bound up in these two pursuits," says Kelly on his website. "During my boyhood and the early part of my adolescence, the lure of football – ‘Aussie Rules’ as it was popularly known at the time – was so strong I thought about little else. I played it, watched it, read about it, and dreamed about it. Gradually, however, that obsession started to fade. A new interest started to jostle for space in my awkward teenage consciousness – music."

Kelly's convinced the two pursuits have a lot in common (anyone who's seen musicians gasping around the pitch at the annual Reclink Community Cup could confirm that mutual respect), and with this in mind he's lining up some fantastic pairings over the coming months, to sit and philosophise a spell.

You can expect topics like: how friendships are formed in footy and music; whether the disciplines of training and rehearsing are similar; whether there's any room for a true maverick in either field any more... and of course the guests' favourite albums and footballers.
