Time Out Melbourne

Welcome back, Schoolhouse Studios - the collective has regrouped in a purpose-built artist village in Collingwood, and they'd like you to help them launch it

Schoolhouse Studios' old abode at the Abbotsford Steiner School may be gone, but the spirit never died. In fact, the collective has now set up camp down the road at Collingwood’s Rupert Street. This time around, it’s less a ragtaggle crew of artists, kids and chickens, and more a bustling hub.

They’re calling it an artist village, made up of laneways and courtyards. This modular fit-out is designed by architect Murray Barker and interior designer Raphael Kilpatrick, and so they’re keen to show off the collaboration at the launch in July.

Artist villages can become both successful (the converted factories of the 798 Art District in Beijing is a great example), or, on occasion, rather too self-contained, but with other projects like No Lights, No Lycra and record label Two Bright Lakes under the founders’ belts, we’re confident they have the sprawling networks to make Schoolhouse an inviting prospect for everyone. The not-for-profit organisation grew from 27 artists in 2010 to over 100 by 2012, and will now be able to offer affordable workspace to further artists.

The building is owned by the Molonglo Group – a Canberra-based organisation dedicated to the development and restoration of sustainable property. As the ‘active landlord, they’re subsidising nearly half the rent.

Join the artists for a cheeky drink or two as they celebrate the new Schoolhouse era. Entertainment includes local bands (TBA) and DJs Vincent Del Negro and DJ Susan.
