Time Out Melbourne

Meet the ladies who are more about old and borrowed than new and blue

It’s a cliché, but it’s true. In a flurry of bridal fairs, Pinterest binges and endless vintage wedding blogs, newly engaged couples can lose perspective when it comes to planning their perfect wedding.

“People might’ve dreamed all their lives of having a wedding with peonies, and don’t realise that they’ll have to import them because they’re out of season.”

This is Laura Issell: founder of event styling company Interior Hunter and lover of all things DIY. Importing wedding flowers might not seem like the worst crime against nature, but as Issell points out, it’s just one of the ways in which weddings generate unnecessary waste.

The solution? Make your own flower arrangements using native plants. Plant them in pots so you can take them home with you. “People used to think DIY was daggy, but it’s not!” says Issell.

She can even prove it. Together with her friend and lifestyle guru Anna D’Amelio, Issell created Put Your Heart Into It workshops. So far, the pair has run classes on DIY skincare products, terrariums and urban herb gardens.

Their next project – the DIY Sustainable Wedding Workshop and Expo – is their biggest undertaking yet. On the day, future brides and grooms will find rows of stalls buzzing with ideas on table arrangements, decorations, backdrops, floristry and food styling. They’ll learn from professional planners, and end the day with a one-of-a-kind bunting or garland to take home. “It’s a lot of creative fun,” says Issell, “and it’s much cheaper to make your own if you have time.” Whether you’re dreaming of a vintage high tea wedding, rustic farm nuptials or a barefoot beach party, you can’t beat the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve cut-and-pasted your way to wedding perfection, while making the world a cleaner place.
