A capella singalongs with the Sacred Harp Singers of Melbourne happen once a month, as traditional Appalachian folk songs are belted out in four-part harmony. Up to 20 people gather to try out hymns and anthems written in "shape notes," an old-fashioned form of notation popular in the 1700s and 1800s. The penetrating songs were even featured in the Nicole Kidman film Cold Mountain.
If your voice is raw from trying out the songs there's a shared tea (so bring a plate to pass). Now, go practise your 'la' 'so' 'fa' 'mi' and 'do's, dear.
