This event has finished

From the Garden Parties to markets to fireworks, Australia Day 2013 has something to suit every age and budget.

Garden Party

Melbourne Recital Centre

While Melbourne Recital Centre is known for top quality classical acts, the team are keen to reinforce the fact that the programming is more diverse than you might imagine. Get along to the Garden Party this Australia Day for performances from the Bearded Gypsy Band and indie pop electro group Fantine.

Great Australia Swim Day

Middle Brighton Beach

Now in its fourth year, the day includes a variety of events ranging from the newly introduced 650 metre intermediate swim to the gruelling five kilometre event. All swimmers will go in the draw to win a share of $5,000 worth of prizes including a six night trip to Bali. Then, cheer on as Michael Klim and other Olympians join teams for the four-by-400m Celebrity Relay event.

Diafrix at Fed Square Live

Federation Square

Diafrix are taking their community-minded hip hop to Fed Square this Australia Day as part of the Fed Square Live series. The Melbourne based duo comprises of two African refugees who call Australia home and has made a huge impact on the hip hop scene here over the last decade.

The Southside Handmade and Vintage Market

St Kilda RSL

Here’s one for all you old-schoolers. A monthly event, this neat little Saturday market offers an excellent range of everything vintage. Get your authentic old-fashioned clothing, accessories and homewares for considerably less than whatever they cost at Dangerfield. The perfect way to kill the afternoon in style.

Australia Day at Cross Keys Hotel

Cross Keys Hotel

Cross Keys Hotel will be celebrating Australia Day in true Aussie spirit. Join them for a thong throwing competition, free pony rides, a petting zoo for the kids and a free sausage sizzle lunch. And, to top it all off, there’ll be a load of prizes to be won throughout the day. And there'll be beer, readily available through taps! You can't get much more patriotic than this.

William McInnes: Australia Day Address

Federation Square

Australian actor and author William McInnes will give an address this Australia Day at Federation Square. He'll be speaking on the topic of what it means to be Australian – something he's well equipped to do, having starred in some of the country's best-loved dramas, including Blue Heelers and Sea Change.

Free Australia Day Concert at the Bowl

Sidney Myer Music Bowl

And now for something rather lovely. This Australia Day there's a free concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl – with popular swing tunes from the 17-piece B# Big Band. We fully expect impromptu crowd swing-dancing, jitterbugging and jiving to these ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s classics, so don't let the side down.

Australian Open finals screening

DFO South Wharf

If you don't have tickets to the Australian Open men's and women's finals, get in the spirit of things by heading to the banks of the Yarra, where there will be an open-air screen on the green in South Wharf, between the Yarra and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Australia Day at Docklands

Harbour Esplanade

If you're already heading to South Wharf for the Australian Open screening, then by crikey it would be churlish not to stop at Docklands first. There'll be a sausage sizzle afoot, kite flying, entertainment, and expert fishers offering free lessons on how to fish – with rods tackle and bait supplied and giveaways for kids.

Fifth Leg Bad Taste Amnesty

First Choice Liquor

Inferior wines of Australia, you are on your last legs. This Australia Day, head to a First Choice Liquor outlet and you can trade in a nasty bottle of swill for a bottle of Fifth Leg Wine. So raid the cupboards, get rid of some unwanted gifts or Christmas leftovers, and say no to bad wine.

Australia Day Thong Challenge

Torquay Beach

Now an annual event, Havaianas are again hosting their Australia Day Thong Challenge for punters to come along and create a sea of giant inflatable thongs, for a bit of fun but also in an effort to keep breaking their world record of the biggest chain of inflatable air beds (because the competition is really hot, you guys).

Australia Day Picnic and Federation Vehicle Display

King's Domain Gardens

Pack a picnic basket and mosey on down to Kings Domain Gardens for a family-friendly day of arts, craft, food and entertainment such as trumpeter James Morrison and a sky high show by the Royal Australian Air Force’s Roulettes. The collection of more than 450 vintage vehicles on display is sure to tickle the fancy of any car fanatic.

Trans-Turkish Express at Sidney Myer Music Bowl

Sidney Myer Music Bowl

Celebrate all things Turkish this Australian Day with a free evening concert featuring traditional Turkish dance, music and pre-show entertainment from 6pm. Arabian-rock group Istanbul Arabesque Project will headline, supported by a collection of homegrown Turkish delights.

Bowled Over at the St Kilda Bowls Club

St Kilda Bowls Club

If sitting around while listening to Triple J's Hottest 100 isn’t your thing, jump up and head to the St Kilda Bowls Club this Australia Day. There'll be plenty of barefoot bowling, cheap beers and ciders, BBQ delights, live sets  as well as a live stream of the Hottest 100, so you can be assured of great music all day.

Hottest 100 Party at The Espy

The Espy

A bevvy by the seaside on Australia Day, as well as some live music and the Hottest 100 streaming from midday, sounds pretty good to us. After all is said and done with Triple J’s Hottest 100, Worlds End Press will take the stage for an all-out dance party. Best of all, it’s free! There really is no better day to celebrate great Australian music.
