Fancy yourself a bit of a whiz on the dancefloor? Got the Lindy Hop down pat and looking to meet like-minded people? There's plenty for seasoned shoe-shufflers and newbs alike at the Melbourne Swing Festival.
The Workshops (Lithuanian Club, Czech House and North Melbourne Town Hall, North Melbourne 3051. Sat 10am-5pm; Sun 11am-6pm. $150 for single-day pass. Jun 8-9.) are run in four learning streams, from intermediate to Really Super Mega Advanced Plus. The teachers hail from all over the world and include: Skye Humphries with Naomi Uyama, Nicolas Deniau with Mikaela Hellsten, Remy Kouakou with Ramona Staffeld and Gastón Fernández with Tina Rizza. All levels of experience will have the chance to attend one class with each duo on the Saturday and Sunday.
Social events run after workshops, including a welcome brunch and different dance events each night. The Roaring Swing (Melbourne Town Hall, 90-120 Swanston St, Melbourne 3000. www.melbournejazz.com. 6.30-11.30pm. $40. Sat Jun 8.), runs in conjunction with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Dress up in your finest 1920s getup for an evening of glamour and hot jazz and dance to the smooth tunes of Michael McQuaid and his Red Hot Rhythmakers and Leigh Barker and the New Sheiks.
The festival winds down with some barefoot bowling on Monday afternoon. Struttin’ with some Barbeque … Swingin’ with the Band (Venue TBA. 4pm-midnight. $25 plus $20 for bowling. Mon Jun 10.) is a festival favourite featuring an evening of bowls, board games and barbeque fare. Of course there will be DJs and house band to dance to, if you can still feel your feet after the weekend’s events.
