Beginning as a passion project of graphic designer George Hedon in 2011, Pause Festival 2014 is branching out of its Federation Square heart to invade spaces all over the city, offering events that will refresh and inspire professionals and keen observers alike.
The $200 ticket price will get you access to the Pause Stage, where industry professionals in the fields of motion, web, creative, music, start-ups and gaming will impart their secrets of success. Meet crowd-funding giant Pozible’s co-founder Rick Chen, and gawp at the chance to hear Zero Latency directors Time Ruse and Scott Vandonkelaar explain how they somehow actually get paid to create virtual reality zombie shooter worlds. If you’re brave enough, book your place for Elevator Pitch, where you’ll get two feverish minutes to sell your big idea to industry investors (session times TBA).
The free offerings this year are more than worthwhile. Kick things off with the Incredibly Short Film Festival at Fed Square, (7pm-8pm, 11pm-12am. Free. Thu Feb 13) spend one day making an entire film at the Hub (9am-5pm. Free. Thu Feb 13) then get down and boogie at Loop Bar (10pm. Free. Fri Feb 14). Don’t miss free gigs from bands including Drop Frame and LowLakes (8.30pm-11.30pm. Free. Fri Feb 14) and DJ Matik (12pm-4pm. Free. Sun Feb 16).
However you choose to spend your Pause Festival, there’s no doubt that you’ll leave feeling ready to take on the digital world. Just make sure you get a good night’s sleep first.
