Time Out Melbourne

Sometimes you just want to sing lustily, for the sheer heaven of it

Dan Greig and six friends began singing in an underground Northcote carpark specifically to enjoy its acoustics. Thirty-year-old Greig has a background in choirs that goes back to his childhood years, when he'd sing six days a week at St Paul’s Cathedral. He’s played in bands – from bluegrass to Brazilian – but his focus is now on teaching others to sing.

And that’s what he does each Monday in a hall in Fitzroy North. A hall, not a carpark? Sadly, winter came. The choir decided they’d like to have luxuries like a heater, and, you know, a toilet. Plus the neighbours had started to complain. “We were belting it,” Greig explains.

They may be relatively bourgeois now, but as Greig notes, the spirit is still there. The name just reinforces the fact that you can sing anytime, anywhere: "in a stairwell, not just in a church".

The 30 choir-goers are evenly mixed between genders. Anyone can join after an easy can-you-carry-a-tune audition. (Men with low voices get “special consideration”.) The a cappella repertoire – with minimal piano backup – runs the gamut: gospel, country, Irish love songs, '90s pop. A tight-knit mob, they head to the pub after for more spontaneous outbursts.

But first, there’s the warm-up. Half an hour is dedicated to improvising and strange vocalisations – things like squeezing their cheeks while humming. It’s all in the name of striving to get better. Greig says: “I try to kick a bit of classical ass.”

If you want to fall into harmony, you can pay on a casual basis, or fork out a bargain $65 for five weeks, or $15 on a casual basis. For more information, email Dan at stick.rhythm@gmail.com.
