Your gateway south of the river is no longer the Southbank Pedestrian Bridge, but the Vortex: a glittering, sparkling portal of light. Who knows – maybe it really will lead you into another dimension. Take a deep breath, follow the flickering light, and see what awaits on the other side.
Andrew, who’s behind the Vortex? The White Night Melbourne technical team led by Rohan Thornton are putting Vortex together. We love the Southbank Pedestrian Bridge and have always thought it would be amazing to make it into a light tunnel.
What will it feel like, walking through it? The bridge will be transformed into an ever-changing vortex of light. People will have the sensation of being transported across space and time.
It feels very Doctor Who/Star Trek. What were your own reference points?
All of the above and more. We want it to be very spacey. Bring your own sci-fi fantasy and play it out.
