Time Out Melbourne

From Flinders Street to North Coburg via the northern suburbs, this tram line has some great places to jump off

Stop 31: Post Office Hotel

231 Sydney Rd, Coburg

This whitewashed gastropub stands out amongst the Islamic clothing stores and halal butchers at the Coburg end of Sydney Rd. Micro brews in the bar, Middle Eastern magic from Troy Payne (ex Momo) in the restaurant. Owned by Tex Perkins and Melbourne rock dogs Shannon Vanderwert and Pat Bourke from Dallas Crane.

Stop 29: Yalla Yalla

28-52 Sydney Rd, Coburg

This end of Sydney Rd is known for its shisha cafés filled with men with moustaches and clouds of delicious apple smoke. This is a good one: big, shiny communal pipes, snacks and comfy cushions to lounge on while you sort out the world’s problems.

Stop 27: Highway 31 Café and Diner

745 Sydney Rd, Brunswick

If you’re into big motorbikes and the large leather-clad dudes who ride them, this is the place for you. Vintage Harleys on the walls, an Elvis pinball machine and huge plates of food from the Deep South. Don’t go if you’re on a diet.

Stop 26: A1 Lebanese Bakery and Food Store

643-645 Sydney Rd, Brunswick

A Sydney Rd institution for the last 20 years, here a pocketful of change will buy you amazing Lebanese pizzas filled with spiced meats and spinach, baklava and a great strong coffee. Rifle through the shelves for Middle Eastern ingredients or even new hookah pipe.

Stop 24: Dejour Jeans

542 Sydney Rd, Brunswick

Don’t let the lack of pop music and aggressive sales assistants fool you, Dejour is the real deal. For more than 20 years Nam has been tailoring jeans for complicated bods. Short, tall, skinny or curvy, for about 40 bucks you can get yourself a new pair of jeans that fit like a denim glove.

Stop 22: Savers Recycle Superstore

330 Sydney Rd, Brunswick

It’s like an op shop that’s bigger than your local supermarket. Rows and rows of pre-loved getups, home wares and furniture. Donate clothes for a discount. Be prepared to spend a fair amount of time elbowing hipsters out of the way to get the best stuff.

Stop 21: Retreat Bar

280 Sydney Rd, Brunswick

Deliciously dingy haunt for good food, free gigs and the best beer garden you’ll get on Sydney Rd. Come for a day session, blink and it’s 2am. No dress code, no renovations, no pretentions. You can’t go wrong.
