Time Out Melbourne

Cinema, comedy, spoken word... if you know where to look, you can keep yourself entertained and educated for no money at all

Rustle papers at a silent cinema

Southgate Complex has brought the outdoor cinema experience undercover this summer for that unpredictable Melbourne weather – bring a date for a free weekday movie as you relax in a deckchair under the open atrium and alternate between the stars and the film... Many of the restaurants are offering pre-movie meals in the complex, so hit up one of their offers just before the movie starts at dusk or take up some chow from the food court. Also, this is Melbourne’s only silent cinema, so grab a set of headphones and don’t worry about anybody hearing your heavy breathing.

Listen to outlandish yarns

True stories – heartwarming, poignant, and downright embarrassing – take centre stage at Bazaar Tales' Bimonthly Storytelling Evening, the newest addition to Melbourne’s spoken word scene. Themes range from ‘The Stupidest Thing I Have Ever Done’ to ‘Miracles’. With an audience-participation section, you might get the courage to tell that one story you always regale people with down at the pub – but this time to a crowd that doesn’t know the punchline.

Have a barrel of laughs

A smile costs nothing, right? And happily, neither do comedy nights if you know where to look...

Comedy at Spleen: Surprise big names mixed with the best locals in a small, packed venue.
Funny at the Brunny: See US comic Ashley Fils-Aime host this fortnightly comedy night, with plenty of guests.

Comed-oke: Watch new comics in a tough, tough environment where the audience may not speak English!
Checkpoint Comedy: Top local comedy plus cheap pizza deals, on a happening street.
Puggs in Space: Good quality up-and-comers in front of a tough-but-fair audience.

Station 59 Comedy: Seeing the absolute newest, rawest comedians in Melbourne, all getting a go.

Exford Comedy: A great-looking comedy room inside one of Melbourne’s more notorious pubs.
Commedia Dell'Parte: A quality local lineup hidden down a laneway in St Kilda.

Comedy at the Dan: Anyone in the north wanting a rare freebie comedy gig on a Friday, this is the place for you. Decent lineups!
Fish Face Comedy: Anyone curious about how a comedy night full of open-micers would go inside a video store in West Footscray. Wonder no more.

Sunday Shorts: See comedy, variety and music all together in a tiny place.
