Think your fairy lights are impressive? Wait till you see the seven metre trees and interactive displays lighting up Melbourne
The lights get bigger and better every year, and now it's on for 2015. Expect giant trees, radio-rigged setups and mega Santas to invade doorsteps and rooftops across the city. This year, it's being topped with snow, albeit fake, to get into the spirit.
Here are just a few of the biggest and brightest Christmas lights flashing around Melbourne throughout December.
Since 1998, Chris from Templestowe has been decking out his house in Christmas decorations from around the globe. This year, the six-metre mega trees are back and the lights have been synchronised to flash in time to the music on 96.9 FM. So tune in and enjoy the show. 360 Porter St, Templestowe. Dec 5-25, Sun-Thu 9-11pm; Fri, Sat 9-11.30pm
With flashing reindeer, an eight-metre tree (one-upping Chris from Templestowe) and a sparkly nativity scene, the creatives at Dalgetty Road are going all out. Wander through their Christmas Village (which doubles as owners Rob and Leonie's home), and peruse the flashing lights and moving displays, or watch a preview on Facebook. 151 Dalgetty Rd, Beaumaris. Nov 29-Dec 31 6, 8.30pm-midnight.
For over half a century, the Boulevard in Ivanhoe has taken Christmas lights to the next level, showering houses, trees and streets in lights and decorations. Get in early as the traffic can pile up pretty quickly, with thousands rubbernecking at the lights every year. The Boulevard, Ivanhoe. Dec 12-24, 8.30-11pm.
Thomson Street amps up its houses and front yards for the festive season. Last year, over 50,000 LEDs were up across three houses, with penguins, reindeer and a mythical elephant on display. Let’s see what they can get together for this year. Thomson St, Northcote. Dec 5-Jan 6 8.30-10.30pm.
Tune into 98.5FM and see this St Helena home dance to music. If the lights dazzle you into feeling extra generous, the Allumba household takes donations for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Track them down on Facebook, or drive over for a visual feast. 24 Allumba Dr, St Helena. Dec 5-25. 8.30pm-midnight.
Kids get free rein at this household with interactive displays, more soft toy buttons to press than most little hands can handle, animals, lights, and Frostie the Snowman sprawled across the home and garden. 43 Jenola Parade, Wantirna South. Dec 4-Jan 4. 8.30-11.30pm.
It's game on in Kew! Two residents seem to be gunning for the best display in the suburb (or who knows, maybe they’re the best of friends). To get into the festive spirit, Coleman Ave is lit with over 37,000 lights, synchronised to music that you can control. Let’s hope the neighbours have earplugs. 19 Coleman St, Kew. Dec 5-25, 8.15pm-midnight.
Taking a leaf out of fellow Kew participants, Parkhill St will also line up their lights to flash in time to music but this display has two massive Christmas trees, a host of smaller ones and an interactive light show that’ll light up the night. Not convinced? Check out their website before you head over, and tune into 107.2FM to watch the computerised Christmas lights dance to the music. 88 Parkhill St, Kew. Dec 5-31, 8.30pm-midnight.
Raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, these computerised Christmas lights flash to carols and videos, with over 40,000 lights on show every night. They've even got their own website and YouTube channel, so you can watch it all from the cosy comfort of your own home (although nothing beats the real thing!). They're also flashing in time to 97.5FM. 47 Gordon Grove, Preston. All December. Sun-Thu 8.45-10.45pm, Fri, Sat 8.45pm-midnight.
Gaining a name for itself as a pretty impressive display, what started out as a friendly competition between neighbours since 2002 has snowballed into another year of Christmas light extravaganza. While you’re checking out the snow machine, trains and reindeer, you can also donate to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. 150 Reichelt Ave, Montmorency. All December, 7.30pm-11.30pm.
Montmorency seems to be the place to be when it comes to Christmas displays. Airlie Road offers photos with Santa in his sleigh, inflatables decorating the house, more now and a miniature Christmas village. 25 Airlie Road, Montmorency. All December, 8.30-11pm.
