Time Out Melbourne

We ask esteemed types what they love about their burb

When did you move to Fitzroy North, and has it changed much since?
We moved in October 2010. So I am relatively new to the area although I have watched the area grow in terms of its cafe and restaurant hotspots, whilst still maintaining the original community feel. People in Fitzroy North just want to enjoy life. I love the fact that I can walk down the street and everyone is so polite and friendly. I think its eclectic nature has kept it such a grounded place. People from all walks of life live here, from business people through to students, and I love that there’s still an older man down the road who has a shop fixing old-school TVs and VCRs. Unheard of! I love it.

Where’s the best coffee to be found?
I love Dench Bakers. Great coffee and great bread!

Do you have a favourite deli?
I go to the Piedimonte supermarket deli. for cold cuts, etc. It's always fresh.

What is your suburb in dire need of?
Some great tennis courts and a great gym.

Do you ever get a take-away in?
Yep we love the BBQ chicken from the Tasty Rooster. YUM.

Have you noticed any foody trends in your ’hood?
Obviously more upbeat restaurants are moving into the area, like Supamaxi, which makes dining out locally a great thing.

Anything you miss from growing up in Mulgrave?
I was born a Mulgrave boy and never forget my roots. Mulgrave is a great family area andis perfect for a large family. I really miss the pool in my parents’ back yard.
