Time Out Melbourne

Two bookstore owners trash it out

Northside: Hares and Hyenas bookshop once operated south of the Yarra, but now it’s a pillar of northside’s queer community. When it comes to sexuality, “young people are more fluid,” says Crusader Hills, the store’s co-owner, “and the straight community are developing their own kinks in the way they see things.”

Crusader’s sure the best queer clubs are northside. “Just look at Circuit, Glasshouse, Laird, Neverwhere and Q&A nights...”

Southside: Beat Bookshop on Prahran’s Commerical Road has been providing Melbourne’s LGBT community with adult products for over three decades, so they’ve seen a thing or two change around town. “Gay and lesbian culture is more widely accepted,” says the store’s manager. But he’s also noticed that the northside is “taking over” when it comes to nightlife. Commercial Road is no longer the only place for night out.
