Time Out Melbourne

This weekend of creative talk boasts more guests than you can poke a stylus at

Update: three new artists have been added to the bill: Janette Beckman (NYC, photographer), Ta-ku (Perth, musician) and Jeff Soto (LA, artist).

Whether you’re a doer or a maker, or just someone who likes hearing other people talk about being a doer or a maker, Melbourne’s own CARBON Festival is where you need to be this March.

CARBON, now in its fourth year, bills itself as “Australia’s premier celebration of contemporary design, culture and style”, and the team has put together yet another impressive line-up of international speakers to earn that title.

Guests comes from the worlds of contemporary art, photography, fashion, design, music, advertising and publishing, and over two days of panels, forums and side events, there’ll be plenty of opportunity to hear about their cutting-edge work and their thoughts about the future of their industries.

The line up includes photographer/videographer Richard Kern, PrettyPuke, Hardy Blechman and Levi Ramsey to the event. They join Los Angeles artist Patrick Martinez, whose practice incorporates elements from his graffiti days and the neon signage of his hometown, and US-based Aussie Mike O’Meally, who’s been at the forefront of skateboarding photography for two decades. Meanwhile, Stephen Malbon, also making the trip from LA, has parlayed the success of his collectable quarterly FRANK151 into the creation of the BON agency, which has worked with some of the world’s biggest brands.

Equally impressive are the Mad Decent label’s creative director Paul Devro, fashion designer Mark McNairy and Complex mag’s Brent Rollins (former creative director of the seminal hip-hop magazine ego trip).
