Time Out Melbourne

Last year, Stonnington's inaugural winter festival saw the giant inflatable ‘Exxopolis’ maze make its way to the rooftop of the Jam Factory complex on Chapel Street. Here's what to look forward to this year...

From Docklands to Fed Square, winter festivals are taking over the city this year – so why should we be particularly excited about this southside spree of arts events? A ripper comedy club, for a start, says festival organiser Francesca Valmorbida from the City of Stonnington. “It will be a really exciting run of emerging and established talent,” she says – and we can attest to that, with the likes of big-name funny people Dave Thornton, Cal Wilson and Tommy Little on the bill, alongside the likes of Justin Hamilton and Michael Workman.

Valmorbida’s chief aim for the festival is simple: to get punters out of the house and onto the streets. “The new Festival Hub in Cato Street will provide a platform for emerging and established artists to come and do something quick and fun, so audiences can come and meet their friends for a drink, then go out to dinner,” she says.

Alternatively, you could stick around for Flicks’n’Feasts (co-hosted by Time Out Melbourne) and watch a movie paired with appropriately-themed food over four wintery nights – expect All-American fare at the Blue Hawaii screening, oriental with Miyazaki's Spirited Away, and Italian food (naturally) with The Italian Job. Alternatively, walk through trendy Greville Street to explore a light spectacular created by projections on the buildings.

In true winter style, an open-air ice skating rink will be set up so you can enjoy the lights and live entertainment while you take on the ice. If you are too uncoordinated for that, cruise the hawker food stands and warm up over some mulled wine while you boogie with roving performers and explore art installations as part of the Arts Burst program.
