Mexican costume designer Yunuen Pérez and cinematographer Sissy Reyes came together in 2011 to share their cross-culture experience after migrating to Australia. Using their creative skills Pérez and Reyes combined their efforts to capture feelings of displacement in a cross-cultural photographic exhibit, Mex-tli Mexican Goddesses. Through the power of imagery, the 12 self-portraits are an intricate weave of meaning that bolster Mexican women into a power of position. The portraits, electrified with colour and distinct purpose, are a revealing insight into the traditions and rituals of these Mexican women culturally isolated by their Melbourne surrounds. These powerful photographs have grabbed the attention of ambassadors from Cuba, Chile, Argentina and Mexico at the Melbourne Latin America Dialogue and frankly, us!
