In praise of craftsmen

Melbourne is Australia’s city of subtle experiences and neighbourhood sentiments. The city’s diverse social network of laneways, boltholes and creative precincts supports a rich ecosystem of start-ups, creative entrepreneurs, studios, bars and unique retail.

In this great southern city of originality and authenticity, strangers still speak to each other in bars. It is here the subtle arts of craftsmanship and conversation humbly persist.

Representing the creative spirit of the city, the Ketel One Commission invites a group of Melbourne ‘modern craftsmen’ to reveal their place in the creative ecology and tell us how they are restoring craftsmanship to the modern world. The Commission articulates a respect for creative practices that preserve tradition, skill and maintain integrity in a world increasingly defined by questionable provenance and impersonation.

While celebrating individual crafts, the Ketel One Commission also explores values that define craftsmanship in an era of consumerism and mass production – respect for tools of the trade, appreciation of materials, pursuit of originality and the search for autonomy.

Hats off to Ketel One for promoting the talents of some of Melbourne’s finest craftsmen. This initiative is a tribute to the subtle values that unite Melbournians as Australia’s premier urban artisans.
