Part workspace, part gallery, Squishface Studio is a brand new haunt for comic art fiends

First published on . Updated on .

Comic artists unite! Squishface Studio is possibly the only place in Melbourne where you can wander in and watch comic artists in action – and check out exhibited works as well. Ben Hutchings is one of six professional comic artists who have started the studio so that like minded illustrators can gather and draw up a storm. “It’s a place where we can work,” Ben says. “We want to show people what we do, and encourage other people to draw as well.”

When asked about whether Melbourne has a thriving comic art scene, Ben quickly assured us it does: “It’s amazing. I know around 60 comic artists here in Melbourne alone. There are always more who I never knew existed. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to open Squishface – to get them out of the woodwork.”

Ben is passionate about bringing more people into the fold, especially as collaboration is such a huge part of the comic art form. “Comic artists are always working together. One person will write, one will draw, one will colour,” he says. “I want people to come in, see what we do – I’m really proud of it.”
