Time Out Melbourne

The second Time Out Melbourne Bar Awards have gone off without a hitch and the very best in the bar scene have taken the gongs across 11 categories from Bar of the Year to Best Bar Food

The beer was chilled, the hot sauce was flowing and the music was pumping as 360 of the city’s top bartenders, media and Time Out readers flocked to Fancy Hank’s BBQ Joint for the second annual Time Out Melbourne Bar Awards.

Recognising the rock stars of Melbourne’s bar scene was what brought the punters to the party – not to mention beer from White Rabbit, cider from Bilpin Cider and wine from Pepperjack Wine. Fancy Hank’s dished up Southern-style collard greens and fried pickles, and of course, their famous pulled pork and beef brisket.

There was no stopping the party tunes from DJ and Bar Awards host Andrew McClelland – that is, until he took to the stage to kick off the proceedings. A huge cheer met the announcement of Bar of the Year, which went to the Everleigh, who have nailed the art of the classic cocktail. Taking out Best New Bar was Le Bon Ton, and the Legend Award – recognising an old favourite that continues to impress – went to Cookie. Port Melbourne’s Harry and Frankie scored Best Wine Bar, and Best Bar Food was awarded to pocket rocket Thomas Olive. Paying tribute to many a raucous nautical night, Best Party Bar was awarded to the Beaufort, while Best Bartender went to Bar Americano’s talented Hayden Lambert. Once again, Fitzroy’s Black Pearl made it into the hit list, with bartender Will Sleeman scoring the Hot Talent award, and the whole gang winning Best Bar Team. And the People’s Choice? Melbourne, you’ve got great taste: Swanston Street’s Goldilocks took the title.

“This year’s pool of talent has made this job particularly hard, especially when you’re pitting institutions against the newcomers who hit the ground running as soon as the doors opened,” said Time Out’s Bars Editor Jess Ho. “If the new bars are anything to go by, it’s an exciting time to be drinking in Melbourne.”

The winners held their Time Out trophies high, but no one went home empty-handed. Everyone left with happy snaps from the Fotobox booth, and of course, a copy of the Time Out Melbourne Bar Guide 2015: your definitive guide to the city’s best bars.
