For years this upper-level Swanston Street bar has served as the watering hole for RMIT students and cheapskates alike. Many a fight has been settled and romance has bloomed upon that girthy smoking deck, encouraged by cheap beers and low lighting.
Somewhat a Revolver of the CBD, they play host to indie bands and have DJs playing sets until breakfast time on the weekends. They've also recently done over their food offering and are now serving a mixed bag of American classics from deep friend mac'n'cheese balls to fried green tomato burgers.
As good for a 3pm pint as a 3am last port of call, Lounge is like a reliable old jacket – something familiar to slip into when you just want a dark nook, a jug of beer and some fried chicken.
It's not the flashest venue in town, but they do what they do well.
Monday nights: acoustic sessions
Pick up a massive $10 parma and listen to some great solo, duo, trio or full band acts, for free.
Wednesday nights: Midnight Soul Ensemble
The band Beat Science play soul, hip hop, reggae funk and future beats, along with a host of local and international guests and DJs. Free from 10pm.
Thursday nights: Overdrive
Live bands play garage rock, punk, swamp and psych, and DJs take you back to NYC circa 1967. Free from 10pm.
Friday nights: Get Lit
DJs Hendrix Lamar, Riki Mirage, Major Phaser, & Quiche-A will convince you to get your drank on; particularly since it's free from 10pm.
Saturday nights: Super Grandé
Moonshine and friends play the best current and throwback club music. At 2am the decks are taken over by club crews such as Baker St, Pleasure Planet, Early Bird & All Night. Free fom 10pm.
