Time Out Melbourne

Comfort, quality and craft beer are the hallmarks of this quiet Fitzroy hero

Most pubs in Fitzroy focus more on old-school comfort than craft beer. At the Gertrude, you get both. Taps are 100 per cent craft, the majority locals like Boatrocker’s Miss Pinky raspberry Berliner Weisse, a summery number with the acid balance of a fresh, fruity cocktail but only 3.3% ABV for all-day drinking. You can get takeaway growlers for kicking on at home, and this year they’ve organised beer-fuelled weekends away touring the breweries of the Victorian High Country.

Food offerings lean towards comfort: penne with fennel sausage has enough chili and garlic to kill that oncoming flu, and bitter green kale to prevent post-pub meal food coma. The bluestone of the front bar is lit with candles, and big windows look out over the picturesque corner of Gertrude and Napier. On a Saturday, it’s calm and warm with no fight on your way to the bar – a welcome respite from the zombie apocalypse of weekend warriors ramping up on Brunswick and Smith Streets.
