Time Out Melbourne

It's all about the suckling pig and free beers at the Grosvenor

When you first enter, it feels like a pub from the outer-suburbs: big, classy, and possibly a little dull. But the details soon add up. On Mondays you can BYO wine from the attached bottle shop, and the meat displayed in the temperature-controlled cabinet suggests the menu has more to offer than your classic parma. Indeed, if you have a spare $600 bucks, 10-12 friends and you give them 72-hours notice, you can devour an entire suckling pig. The extensive wine list and rotating selection of craft beers focus on Australian producers, which means you can knock back Moo Brew’s fruity Hefe or a 4 Pines black-as-tar stout with your eyes fixed on the AFL. The multiple TVs don’t dominate the rooms, meaning you can make the space fit your plans, not the other way around. There’s serious thought behind it all. Entertainment chugs along all week with trivia, live music, and meal specials. There’s a meat tray to be won on Friday, which fills the heart with joy. As do free pots of Carlton till the first point is scored during Saturday’s footy. There are pokies, but kudos for hiding them so you can’t hear their chirping siren-song anywhere else in the pub. For every group of lads, there are couples sinking cocktails and nippers dancing to the Sunday gigs in that way only the very young and very drunk can pull off. Enough to charm your socks right off.
