Time Out Melbourne

As close to a frathouse as you'll ever get in Melbourne

Formerly the Southern Cross Hotel, the pub on the corner of Cecil and Market streets in South Melbourne has been transformed into Hats & Tatts, an American style dive bar/pub complete with pinball, Coors on tap, 80s pro wrestling on the telly and a jukebox with all the fist pumping hits you could ask for.

The menu is short and to the point with fried chicken, burgers and house made pickles, and there’s a serious list of craft beer tinnies including Quiet Deeds, Brew Dog and that American frathouse staple, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Owner Jason Chan (Plenty, West Winds Gin) is backed up by Chris Stock (Hell Towers Saloon, Golden Monkey), and Wizey Baleitavuki (The Rum Diary Bar, Railway Hotel), this crew of hospo veterans won’t be content with cheap beer and burgers. Their drinks program includes classic cocktails on tap, a rotovap (rotary evaporator, or mad scientist gear used for distilling small amounts of anything), and an epic back bar collection gathered over years in the industry. A neon sign brightly entreats you to “Derelict my balls”, leading us to believe their proximity to Kitten’s hasn’t got them as many dates as they’d hoped. But we can derelict our own balls, thanks very much, and now, so can you.

Which Melbourne bar is the best?
