Time Out Melbourne

Carlton’s live gig institution brings music to the kids and the kids to music

Any given night of the week, one Australia’s best rock, indie pop or songwriter acts will be playing in the John Curtin’s 300-person capacity upstairs band room. But more than just an awesome spot to catch a gig, the pub itself is a training ground for the young musicians of Melbourne. In the front bar, you might find an up-and-coming DJ playing ’80s-style electro pop, or students from the nearby Victorian College of the Arts entertaining their peers with intimate neo-soul and jazz performances.

But don’t mistake youth for lack of skill. These guys are pros and it’s a privilege to see them for free. The walls of the Curtin are covered in band posters and the toilets covered in graffiti, as it should be, but despite the grungy edge, the vibe is young, friendly and welcoming. Top it off with a pint of sweet and malty Barrow Boys lager and a Huxtaburger (now occupying the kitchen) and you’ve got Melbourne pub gold.
