So you think you can robot dance? That's just of the tip of the popping iceberg, according to instructor Lenny a.k.a. Enigma. You could just about award Lenny an honorary PhD in dance history for his breadth of knowledge on the genre. Popping, or boogaloo, according to Lenny, is a dance style from California that grew out of the funk music scene as it embraced more electronic sounds.
Hip hop dancing’s meant to be relaxed, so picking up the basic moves isn’t too much of a stretch, but making them look as downright cool as Lenny does is the challenge. He makes just walking around, turning your head and looking at your watch a kind of other-wordly art form.
Though my robot dance needed a lot more polish, I finished my seven day dance-a-thon feeling a little light headed, out of breath and in serious need of going out to put my new moves into practice on unsuspecting dance floors around Melbourne. Boogie fever is real, people, go out and get infected.
