Melbourne Techno Collective: 10 Years of Fucking Techno

This event has finished

The underground crew turns 10 this month and is celebrating in style

Founder Matt Radovich talks to Time Out about why you shouldn’t miss the biggest party in town...

Matt, you helped get the Melbourne Techno Collective off the ground, how did it come about?
Sam (McEwin) was one of the main guys pushing it and wanting to get it off the ground. We both found out that we were at the same parties a lot and he was like, “I’ve got this idea to get these guys together; we should form our own crew and do our own parties.” So he invited me along to play the first one, we started the crew and it just snowballed from there.

It must be pretty cool to be celebrating ten years then?
Yeah, well we never thought people would be interested in us for 10 years and keep coming to our parties. It’s pretty exciting, I’ll tell you that (laughs).

How has your playing developed over the ten years in MTC?
Oh look, I was a hack when I started, I was no good. Then all these years of playing with really great DJs here, you have to step it up and it just made me practice and learn music a whole lot better. If you listen to the mixes I first used to do for MTC and that stuff and listen to my stuff now they’re a hell of a lot different. I’m very thankful.

Did the crew help to push you a bit?
Absolutely, ’cause we’re all mates and after parties we’d come back home and start mixing for another six hours, all together like a little community kind of thing. You had to step it up 'cause if you were playing shit someone would hang shit on you and you don’t want that to happen. All in fun, but you don’t want to do bad in front of mates. So you just keep practicing and not letting it out of your sight that you can do better. It’s just practice – and practice does make perfect.

Having started out so small, how does it feel to have a big name like Steve Rachmad on the bill?
We’re pretty excited to have Steve play for us. I’ve got big piles of Steve Rachmad records, he’s very influential. This is his twentieth year of making amazing records, so to have him come out and celebrate his twentieth with our tenth; it’s kind of really special. I think we’ll be pretty full. It’s amazing, everyone’s so positive about it; tickets are moving really fast... It makes you not want to stop ever doing it.

What does the future hold for the MTC?
I can definitely see us not stopping for a while. I want to see us get 15 years and then 20 years and we’ll be those old guys with grey hair or no hair, standing in the corner going, “It’s too loud, but it’s so good!”(laughs).
