Time Out Melbourne

Why read a good book when the author has taken the story and made it into a standup show?

Anh Do's book The Happiest Refugee told the story of Do's life so well that it not only sold many copies but also prompted Russell Crowe to note that it was "the most surprising and inspiring read I have had in years" without specifying how many other books he had consumed in that time.

Now, Anh combines the stand-up comedy style that made him famous with the real life stories from the book as well as photos and filmed pieces to retell his amazing tale.

Tracing the story of Anh's life in a Malaysian migrant camp, of his family’s boat journey to Australia and of growing up as an outsider in his new home, the book is one of the highest selling autobiographies in Australian history and we think it's pretty funny too.

So does Crowe, who has optioned the rights to make it into a film.
