Australia's gender transition drama comes laiden with awards

There's a touch of the Lars Von Triers about Sophie Hyde's drama 52 Tuesdays. The director followed the rules implied by the title, filming only on Tuesdays and allowing the plot to unfold organically. The story of an unconventional family whose mother is transitioning from female to male, it earned Hyde a Best Director (World Cinema) award at Sundance, and has been picked up for distribution in several countries. And well deserved too: it's a highly original drama about the darker side of teen sexuality and self-perception with bracingly authentic performances by Del Herbert-Jane (a real-life non-gender specific person) and Tilda Cobham-Hervey. It's the rare Australian film that actually has something to say.
