For some, "straight to video" is an expressway to glorious excess

Some like the outlandish cover art. For others VHS represents a last frontier in terms of cult cinema unreleased on DVD. “I just like the look of it, the analogue fuzz, the amazing, obscure trailers,” says Trevor Block, the man behind a gathering of VHS buffs every Monday in Fitzroy’s Old Bar over winter.

The movies are “mostly trash and horror,” he says. Among the gems he screens are the 1973 Blaxsploitation classic, Cleopatra Jones, and Howling 3: The Marsupials. Block is also the proud owner 14 VHS players. “So if you ever need a VHS player, you know where to come.”
