Four inspiring words: feminist suburban movie marathon

A movie passes the Bechdel Test if (1) it has at least two women in it, who (2) talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. "It's such a low bar, and yet so many films still fail," says Karen Pickering, director of the new Girls on Film Festival. "And people are so proud when a film passes it! I'm like, 'So there are two characters who have one conversation that's not about a guy, and you're high-fiving each other?'"

So Pickering and her team were inspired to correct this with a weekend's worth of films. "Not all made by women, but all by filmmakers exhibiting a strong feminist sensibility. We realised that when you go looking for these films, a lot of them are really depressing. Double that for films about women of colour, or disability, or trans women..."

"We didn't want the festival to be a massive downer," Pickering says. "We wanted a party! We had 'suburban movie marathon' in our heads as inspiration. Our challenge was to find films that weren't 'uplifting' in that naff Hollywood way, but that were empowering or authentic." This first GOFF will feature underrated gems through to cult classics, introduced by festival ambassadors nicknamed the fairy GOFFmothers. There's even an all-ages "Girls Germs" session of the riot grrrl doco The Punk Singer. Perfect to keep the party atmosphere alive.
