Because don't all film festivals need a "bastard cousin"?

The Melbourne Underground Film Festival comes with the perfect origin story: it was born when the soon-to-be festival director Richard Wolstencroft's film was rejected by MIFF. (Revenge, apparently, is a dish best served annually.) Ever since, MUFF has been the self-proclaimed "bastard cousin" of MIFF. It rails against safe choices and political correctness, and happily courts controversy to draw attention to low-to-no-budget cinema. One recent theme was "Destroy All Movies". This year's, optimistic by comparison, is "Evolve or Die" – and brings infamous transgressive filmmaker Nick Zedd to Melbourne.
