Time Out Melbourne

Nine movies, five Saturdays, three leading men, one Bond

James Bond contains multitudes. Just like Sherlock Holmes, The Doctor, or Batman, he's been around for so long the movies have warped and stretched around him. He is embodied by multiple actors, grows old and young at whim, and stars in films ranging from serious espionage to smirking farce. (Let's never forget that in Moonraker, Bond's boat turning into a hovercraft inspired a pigeon to do a doubletake.)

Certain characteristics, however, have set themselves in stone. Soaring ballads over silhouetted credits. Elaborate action setpieces. Unflappable cool in impossible danger. Beautiful women and exotic locations. And while Bond has sometimes struggled to seem relevant, his gadgets, guns, booze, and cars uniquely equip him to shoulder the one burden of contemporary blockbusters: product placement. Even this has its limits, however. Drinking Heineken in Skyfall? Sacrilege!

The Astor presents five sessions of classic Bond, all in digitally remastered 4K format. There's Dr No (1962) with From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964) with Thunderball (1965), a single feature of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) with For Your Eyes Only (1981), and Octopussy (1983) with A View to Kill (1985).
