Time Out Melbourne

The much-loved cinema is back, with one of the best movie line-ups we've seen

The crowning jewel of Curtin House is Rooftop Cinema – home of super-comfy deck chairs, top-notch cocktails and the best 360-degree city views around. Kick off with a Thai feast at Cookie downstairs, then settle in for an indie classic, illuminating doco or new release.

Before the season proper begins on Saturday December 5, Rooftop is getting in on the Melbourne Music Week action with some free screenings of red-hot music documentaries. On Tuesday November 17, you can catch Amy – the devastating and intimate Amy Winehouse documentary by director Asif Kapadia, based almost entirely on found footage (read Time Out's four-star review). The screening starts at 8.30pm, but we recommend getting there much earlier if you want a seat. Other #MMW films include Straight Outta Compton (Wed Nov 18) and Play It Safe (Thu Nov 19).

Highlights of the first half of the Rooftop Cinema program (Dec 5-Jan 31) include:
The Martian. Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars misadventure, starring Matt Damon. Sat Dec 5.

Trainwreck. Amy Schumer subverts the romantic comedy format (while falling in love with Bill Hader). Wed Dec 9.

Bridesmaids. One of the funniest films of 2011, starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne. Tue Dec 15.

Jurassic World. Read our interview with Chris Pratt – raptor wrangler in the latest film of the dino franchise. Sun Dec 20.

Home Alone. The perfect antidote to the inevitable onslaught of sappy Christmas movies. Wed Dec 23.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part two. The final instalment of Katniss Everdeen's thrilling fight for freedom, starring Jennifer Lawrence. Sat Jan 2.

The Princess Bride. Surely, this cult comedy-adventure needs no introduction by now. Wed Jan 6.

Mad Max: Fury RoadGeorge Miller's post-apocalyptic thriller, starring Charlize Theron and Tom HardySat Jan 30.
