How many other festivals give you a superhero who wears women's panties on his face?

The Japanese Film Festival is back for it’s 17th year and will be hosted at Hoyts Melbourne Central and ACMI Cinemas.

There are the absurd, nonsensical comedies typical of Japanese film such as HK/Forbidden Super Hero, where the hero’s calling card is wearing a pair of female undies on his head, and The Apology King, which examines the not-so-humble art of apologising.

For all you nostalgia and anime fans, Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods is hitting the big screen with the original creator, Akira Toriyama, lending his name to the script for the first time. Let's see how long it takes for Goku to use the spirit bomb this time.

Beyond the Memories is a romance based on the popular manga Kiyoku Yawaku, but if you are up for a more melancholic story, The Samuri that Night explores loneliness and the need for human connection.

For those who enjoy darker movies, check out The Devil’s Path which examines real life crimes in modern Japan, the thriller Shield of Straw, which debuted at Cannes Film Festival, or Orpheus’ Lyre, where a mother is convinced her baby has been reincarnated as another woman’s child.
