Time Out Melbourne

The much-loved outdoor cinema unveils a cracking summer line-up of cult classics and new releases

The Shadow Electric's summertime cinema screens a mixture of old, new, mainstream and arthouse cinema each year – and before the film begins, you're treated to 20 minutes of locally made shorts and music videos.

Located inside the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent, the Shadow Electric's screen is flanked by convent walls – eerily up-lit in blue and purple – with towering spires overhead. If the unusual surrounds don't make this a must-do on your summer hit-list, then the killer program will.

Our highlights include Yorgos Lanthimos's peculiar romantic sci-fi film, The Lobster (Sun Jan 3), Oscar hopeful Mad Max (Fri Jan 11), MIFF favourite Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (Sun Jan 13) and Jocelyn Moorhouse's stunningly directed The Dressmaker, starring Kate Winslet (Tue Jan 19).

Gear up for the program with our interview with Tom Hardy on Mad Max, and with Jocelyn Moorhouse, director of The Dressmaker.

Later in summer, catch instant queer cinema classic Holding the Man (Thu Feb 11) and the recent Macbeth adaptation, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cottilard (Fri Feb 12).

Stay tuned for the second half of the season, which will extend to April.
