Keep your ears peeled for the next big bang...
It’s been the go-to shop in Prahran for men’s swimwear, underwear, clubwear (we’re talking figure-hugging singlets, tight jeans and shorty shorts, naturally) and party tickets for Melbourne’s gay community since 1996, but in late July, Bang Clothing in Cato Street, just off Commercial Road, closed its doors. Of course, there was lots of discussion and debate about why – the gradual decline of Prahran’s gay hub, the effect of online shopping, lack of community support – but the truth of it is Bang’s Sydney store has been keeping the Melbourne store afloat. Owner Dean White has stated it was a simple, pragmatic decision, but has also hinted at a rebirth in a new location and new staff – and hopefully lots of new swimwear, just in time for summer. Otherwise, the Prahran Pool’s Pansy Patch won’t be its usual colourful self...
