Time Out Melbourne

Looking to get some action?

Guys, looking to get some action without navigating online chat rooms or Grindr? You can always go to an SOPV. Here, in no particular order, are Melbourne’s top five gay saunas and cruise lounges – and remember to play safe.

Wet on Wellington

Wet is one of Melbourne’s most popular saunas. Staggering distance from the Collingwood bars, it’s busiest on Friday and Saturday nights. With its very busy steam room, a cosy spa and sauna, a 25-metre pool, bar and Greco-Roman decor downstairs, and a cruising maze upstairs with porn lounges, private cubicles and not-so-private areas, you can lose yourself here for hours. 162 Wellington St, Collingwood. Mon-Thu noon-2am; Fri-Sun open 24 hours.

Club 80

Not far from the Peel and Sircuit, this is a cruise lounge where you remain clothed... mostly. The basement is lit with oil barrels for putting on a show. First floor has free tea and coffee, a cyber lounge and movie lounge. The second level is a cruise maze with private cubicles, glory holes, and a mezzanine heavy-duty area with sling rooms you can book. It’s all semi-industrial, so it feels sleazy, but completely safe. 8-10 Peel St, Collingwood. Open daily from noon-late.

Subway Sauna

Subway is the only sauna in the CBD, and has a discreet entrance on Banana. As well as a couple of rabbit-warren-like mazes with disorienting mirrors and a couple of porn lounges, Subway has a good-sized spa, steam room and sauna, and the wet area is the most popular, for both action and cruising. A chillout video lounge, cyber lounge and café means this venue attracts CBD workers out for a lunchtime quickie. Vault 13, Banana Alley Vaults, Melbourne. 24 hours.

55 Porter St

This sauna has been going for over 20 years – and it’s obvious. It used to pump, literally, but now it’s a little shabby. The large spa is good for a soak, but the small steam room smells dank. Upstairs there’s a porn lounge, more cubicles and some larger rooms if you’re looking to host more than two. It may have passed its prime, but the clientele make it worth a visit. 55 Porter St, Prahran. Tue-Thu 6pm-late; Fri-Sun open 24 hours.
