Get ready for the Commercial Road is Dead debate to kick in again, as long-time gay venue Heavens Door announces its closure in the next few weeks. It’s not clear if it’s closing because of dropping patronage, or whether it was always part of owner Brian Frewin’s retirement plan. He’s sold the venue, which will re-open after a makeover, but it’s not known if it will continue to be a gay venue. Frewin has also sold nearby cruise club, Ten Plus in Porter Street, but that will continue as is for the next 18 months. What does it all mean for Melbourne’s gay scene? Who knows...

Their service is disgraceful!! We didn't even get to eat here because after driving an hour to get there with a newborn baby, they told us that a new staff member "made an innocent mistake" and we were booked onto a table that wouldn't fit us and our pram! We confirmed our booking TWICE with these people and were assured that we would fit and everything was fine. In order to rectify the situation, we were offered a table outside, whilst a storm was brewing which was obviously not an ideal area to be sat with a one week old baby!! Not once were we offered any other solution, nor were we treated nicely. The male manager that we spoke to was argumentative and told us they would NOT accommodate us in their restaurant. We were very excited to try The Flying Squirrel and looking forward to have a nice evening to celebrate the birth of our new baby with our family and were basically kicked out and discriminated against because we had a baby and a pram!! If you're looking for good service and would like to be treated with respect... DO NOT GO HERE!.
