Keep the kids entertained over the winter holidays with detective trails, endless crafts and filmmaking at Heide Museum of Modern Art
Less than half an hour from the CBD is an immersive modern art gallery, a peaceful sculpture garden (featuring the famous corrugated iron cows) and the best opportunity for kids to get stuck into art these school holidays. The Heide Museum has come up with some left-field activities designed to get kids engaging with the exhibition and exercising their creative minds. Many of the activities are free, but some are paid and require bookings. Sessions include:
Solve cryptic clues and win a prize from the lucky dip by following maps through the exhibitions, gardens and buildings in the Heide Detective challenge. Free with admission. Saturday June 27 – Sunday July 12.
Construct your own fantastical figurine out of clay with ceramicist Marlize van Rijswijk Myburgh. Have your masterpiece fired and glazed at the Manningham Art Studios (BYO apron). 10am-noon. $25-$30. Bookings essential. Wednesday Jul 1.

Prismatic Printing with Melinda Harper:
Explore colour, collage and printmaking with artist Melinda Harper, and produce your own optical prints (BYO apron). 10am-noon. $25-$30. Bookings essential. Friday July 3.
Heide Teens - Shadow Play Photography:
Teens can play with light, the human body and bold-shaped objects with photographer and video artist Sofi Basseghi. Experiment with camera angles, sidelight, frontlight and backlight techniques to create amazing shadow imagery. (BYO snack & drink). 10am-noon. $25-$30. Bookings essential. Tuesday July 7.
Grandparents Day - Be your own Superhero:
Dress up as your favourite superhero to create and film a story based around your character. Work with your grandparents and multimedia artist Michelle Mills to make props, write a script and film the story, which will be published on the Heide website to view at home. 10am-noon. $18-$22. Get up close to nature with slithering reptiles and animal bones, sketching with a range of soft and hard pencils alongside instructor Andrew McKenzie. Children will be introduced to the unique physiology of reptiles in this live-show art workshop.10am-noon. $25-$30. Bookings essential. Thursday July 9.
The World At Your Fingertips:
Join the Hama bead craze! Children can design beautiful mini-artworks of intricate patterns with the flexibility of brightly coloured Hama beads, a perfect tool for artistic expression. Kids can even bring their artworks home for the fridge. 10am-noon. $25-$30. Bookings essential. Friday July 10.
Family Day - Farmyard Animals:
Put some fun back into the winter holidays at Heide’s Family Day. Children can hold animals in the farmyard petting zoo, become a detective in one of the trails, and get creative making masks and origami critters. (BYO winter coat and gumboots). 11am-2pm. Free. Sunday July 12.
The Not So Ordinary with Melinda Harper:
Participants can use glass, ceramics, wood and mirror to re-invent vessles and bottles inspired by the exhibition Colour Sensation: The Works of Melinda Harper, under the teachings of Melinda herself. 10am-1pm. $25-$30. Bookings essential. Sunday July 26.
Using water-based oil paints, children can discover key painting techniques such as scumble, glaze, underpainting and impasto to produce their own work of art. 10am-1pm. $25-$30. Bookings essential. Sunday August 30.
