Learn about the rich history of Melbourne's first people

Wominjeka is a word for 'welcome' from the Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung language groups, the traditional owners of the Melbourne area. Now Melbourne Museum are saying wominjeka to kids and families these school holidays with lots of fun activities running every day.

First check out First Peoples, an exhibition that celebrates the rich history, language, achievements and contemporary culture of Victoria’s Aboriginal peoples. It's the largest exhibition ever to focus on the story of Aboriginal Victoria from the time of creation to today. There will also be daily activities to complement the exhibition. Get crafty and make and decorate a possum-skin inspired cloak, as worn by Victoria’s First Peoples, daily from 11am to 3pm. Gather on the welcome mat to share stories and laughter during Birrarung story time, daily at 11am, noon and 1pm. Also before you head to the Museum download the Time Lens mobile app, which allows kids to discover hidden treasures with the swipe of a smart phone.
