Time Out Melbourne

Coming alive from the popular children’s book series, Angelina Ballerina is putting on a show for all those kids who love to sing and dance

Maybe you were one of those. One of the tutu brigade. Wrapped in tulle, toes turned out, endlessly thumping down the hallway in a string of jetés. While kids’ cartoons offered Care Bears and Rainbow Brite, five-year-old you was captivated by ethereal creatures in ballet videos. And maybe a pretty costume or two.

But in all your unrealised dreams of being prima ballerina, did you ever aspire to being a ballet-dancing mouse?

Angelina Ballerina has put the en-pointe aspirations of a new generation into overdrive. Star of more than 35 books since 1983, the hyperactive white rodent was born of London ballet mum Katherine Holabird. The books are well-loved, but it’s her plummy-voiced cartoon career that’s launched Angelina’s dream of being a world-famous dancer.

TV Angelina is voiced by Flinty Williams, daughter of Judi Dench. And the Dame also features, as heavily accented dance instructor Miss Lilly Mouseakova. That’s impressive, but it’s unlikely that the Oscar-winning star-power wins the fluttering hearts of baby ballerinas. Rather, it’s some smart marketing – based on the simple premise that little girls like pink.

Angelina is owned by UK telly powerhouse HIT Entertainment; also home to gender-stereotyping Fireman Sam, Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder. Last year, toy overlord Mattel bought out the company for more than half a billion and a few months later, TomKat kid Suri Cruise was spotted with an Angelina Ballerina doll that was as big as her.

And now, the mouse is coming to Melbourne. In the past there have been ballet interpretations, but this is a musical theatre show with dialogue and a variety of dance styles, suitable for ages three and up. Five live performances of her new West End ‘Mousical’ will see a plague of high-pitched pink, as thousands of toddlers and pre-teens pour in for the all-singing, all-dancing spectacle.

Parents, you’ve been warned.
