This new and evolving barbershop has a whole lot of character. Comics, figurines, framed photos, Elvis sculptures, vintage boxing gloves and bric-a-brac adorn the walls. Old-school country music plays and the barber-ladies have a whole lot of swagger. Dishing out buzz cuts, haircuts, hot towel shaves and even nose hair trims, this place is fast becoming the trendy Melburnian gentleman’s barber of choice. Fitzroy.

Don’t be perturbed by the stuffed peacocks and tutu-clad flamingos as you enter, this salon has plenty of ‘mister fox’ treatments. One standout is the back exfoliation treatment: After an exfoliation with detoxing basil and mint oils and coarse sea salt to treat the skin, a firm massage will relax even the most overworked shoulders. Smack bam in the middle of the CBD, this little slice of heaven is a great after work treat. Melbourne.

There’s not a cup of herbal tea to be sniffed at this male-only salon designed for men who might find the average beauty parlour a bit too much. The friendly, fuss-free staff offer styling advice as they guide you through the Perfect Man treatment (a haircut, express facial and face waxing of the eyebrows or cheekbone). Follow up with a vischy shower scrub and massage for a head-to-toe sprucing – you can roll into this place looking like a tumbleweed and you’ll walk out feeling like a million bucks. Melbourne.

This alternative hairdresser does a lot of undercuts, patterns and crazy colouring. But the house specialty here is dreadlocks extensions: a mystical craft that involves crocheting human hair into your own and then dreading it up. They have also been known to perform the odd beard extension – also known as hipster facial hair equal opportunities services. If you can grow an inch or so of your own, these hair wizards will do the rest. North Melbourne.
