Time Out Melbourne

This event has finished

Before the internet, before mobile phones, even before the Yellow Pages, there was the Sands and McDougall directory. Curated by arts journalist Andrew Stephens, this exhibition looks at the impact of the mammoth directory which often exceeded 3000 pages and dates back to 1857. Unsurprisingly, there's a lot this resource can tell us about our city that isn't available online and shows us an intricate and timely view of the evolution of Melbourne. Not quite a census, not quite a phonebook, Sands and McDougall's directory is an overarching fragment of history never before summarised in such a way.
