Many Melbourne museums are free all year round, like the Hellenic Museum, dedicated to Greek culture, history and settlement in Australia.
Bang in the middle of the Melbourne Central shopping centre is the Coops Shot Tower, with a small museum inside, open Thu-Sat each week.
The Victoria Police Museum hosts Kelly Gang armour, photos of crime scenes and forensic evidence.
Over in Point Cook the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) Museum is on the site of the birthplace of the Australian Flying Corps and the RAAF.
As for some transient exhibitions worth catching, over at the NGV International, Ballet & Fashion showcases sumptuous and bizarre collaborations between dance and design (until May 19).
At the State Library of Victoria, most exhibitions are free. Try Gusto! A Culinary History of Victoria – guaranteed to get stomachs rumbling (until Apr 28).
