Giddy-up to this museum honouring Melbourne horseplay
Horse racing is "the sport of kings"? Not in Melbourne it ain't. Here it's a people's pastime. Kings and paupers share the same passion for the punt and the ponies and, when the betting is done, each faces the same odds to emerge a winner.
This grand museum pays tribute to horses, jockeys, trainers, strappers and stablehands and to us, the public, who hold them in thrall. There are excellent exhibits dedicated to the Melbourne Cup and its accordant fashions as well as wider statements on the social and cultural vitality of racing in Australia.
